Polar Bears

“Ursus maritimus” is the scientific name of polar bears. Polar Bear is the world’s largest predator found on land. Though polar bears are closely related to brown bears, it has many body characteristics adapted for cold temperature like moving across snow, ice and open water and for hunting the seals. A polar bear spends in the frozen sea much of the year though most polar bears are born on land, that’s why they are called marine mammal.

Polar bears are excellent swimmers and have been seen in open Arctic waters as far as 97 km from land. The common hunting method of polar bears is called still-hunting because they use their excellent sense of smell to locate a seal-breathing hole.

As many years passed, the polar bears has been a key figure in the material, spiritual, and cultural life of Arctic indigenous peoples, and the hunting of polar bears remains important in their cultures.
